Most organizers start with a spreadsheet: player names, assigned targets, and elimination status. But by week two, three problems kill every spreadsheet: data entry falls behind, the target chain breaks when players quit, and the list leaks to everyone, which ruins secrecy. Every organizer's first instinct is a spreadsheet. It makes sense: a list of names, a column for targets, another for eliminated players. You can see the whole game at once. But spreadsheets don't scale past week one. Here's what goes wrong, and when you should stop fighting it.

What organizers actually track

A real game spreadsheet is simple at first. Column A: player names in the order they joined. Columns B through D: their target, their status (alive or eliminated), and a note for when they got out. You add a few rows and you're done. Some organizers add a timestamp for when each elimination happened so they can trace the chain later.

As the game grows, organizers add columns. One for the player's phone number or email, so you can message them when they're eliminated. Another for whether they've read the message. A third for the player who eliminated them, so you can rebuild the bracket if someone goes dark. It sprawls fast. By week one you have ten columns and eighty rows, and you're checking it every hour.

The three breakpoints

Spreadsheets die the same way every season. The failures aren't mysteries. They're predictable, they're simultaneous, and they compound. Once any one of them lands, the rest follow fast.

The good news: you can see these breaking points coming. The better news: there's a system that doesn't have any of them.

Failure mode one: data entry lag

Someone gets eliminated at lunch. They message the organizer, who updates the spreadsheet. But that organizer is in class. By the time they open the file, two other eliminations have happened. The organizer is now running a backlog. They're entering eliminations out of order. They're guessing who inherited which target. Players are messaging them asking whether they're still in the game, and the organizer doesn't know if the latest version is saved.

Spreadsheets are not live. Every update requires a person to stop what they're doing, remember what happened, open the file, find the right cell, type the change, and save. In a game with sixty players, that's sixty decisions an hour during the busy weeks. One person can't keep up, and shared editing breaks the data. You end up with a spreadsheet that's always a few hours behind the actual game.

Failure mode two: the chain collapses

Someone eliminates their target on a Tuesday. You update the spreadsheet. Now you have to look up who their target's target was, and assign it to them. Simple. But what if that target was eliminated last week? What if they got caught and quit? Then you're scrolling through cells trying to find someone in the chain who's still alive. You're rebuilding the bracket cell by cell.

It gets worse when multiple eliminations stack. Three players get out on the same day. Three new assignments are due. But one of the three players who just got eliminated also had someone assigned to them. Now someone is waiting for a new target. One mistake and you've broken a link. One missed player and a chain is orphaned. By week three, half your spreadsheet is question marks and notes like 'figure this out later.'

Failure mode three: the list leaks

A friend asks who their target is. You send them the link to the spreadsheet so they can look themselves up. They do. Then they take a screenshot, crop it to just the target column, and send it to five friends. Now half the school knows everyone's target.

Even if you lock the spreadsheet, it still lives in Google Drive or OneDrive or on your laptop. One person sends a copy to the group chat. One person forgets to delete it from their phone before returning it. One person downloads it and your shared drive leaks it. The spreadsheet was never secret, and in this game, the whole point is secrecy.

When to switch from a spreadsheet

You can fight through failure mode one with discipline. Most organizers do. Enter eliminations every hour. Batch them. Be systematic. You can limp through a season on a spreadsheet if you're vigilant enough.

Failure modes two and three are harder to patch. Once the chain breaks, you're doing arithmetic in your head and guessing about dead-ends. You're probably rebuilding the whole bracket at the midpoint. Once the list leaks, you've lost the core mechanic: players should not know who's hunting them. If your spreadsheet is the source of all game state, and anyone can access it or copy it, the game is broken. That's when you abandon the spreadsheet. And that usually happens by week two.

What a real system does instead

Can I just use a shared spreadsheet and make it work?
